Forget dragons, wizards, and enchanted kingdoms. Last Knights (2015) takes the medieval fantasy formula, removes most of the fantasy, adds a generous supply of grim-faced warriors, and drops them into the castles and landscapes of the Czech Republic.

Kazuaki Kiriya’s action drama stars Clive Owen as fallen warrior Raiden, Morgan Freeman as his dishonored master Bartok, and Aksel Hennie as corrupt minister Geza Mott, alongside Cliff Curtis, Ahn Sung-ki, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Ayelet Zurer, and Payman Maadi.

Written by Michael Konyves and Dove Sussman, the film is loosely based on the Japanese legend of the 47 rōnin, reimagined as a Western-style tale of loyalty, revenge, and political corruption.

The setting is deliberately fictional, and while Last Knights looks like it was filmed in some mysterious medieval empire far, far away, much of that world was actually created in the Czech Republic.

⚔️  Last Knights Filming Locations

The production of Last Knights spent around ten weeks shooting across historic Czechia locations, with castles, ruins, forests, and studio facilities helping create its fictional empire.

🏰  Křivoklát Castle

Křivoklát Castle brings some serious medieval credentials to Last Knights. One of the Czech Republic’s oldest royal castles, it dates to the 12th century and served as a residence and hunting retreat for Bohemian kings.

Fires, wars, and rebuilding shaped its Gothic architecture. For Last Knights, its towering walls, stone courtyards, and grand interiors provided a convincing setting for Raiden and his fellow warriors.

🌲  Bohemian Paradise

Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) brought some of Last Knights’ most dramatic natural scenery to the screen. Located northeast of Prague, this protected landscape is known for towering sandstone formations, dense forests, deep valleys, and panoramic viewpoints.

The spectacular Prachov Rocks are among its biggest draws. The rugged terrain works beautifully for the film’s harsher outdoor sequences, giving Raiden and his warriors a convincing sense of travelling through a remote medieval world.

🛡️  Rábí Castle

Rábí Castle gives Last Knights one of its most imposing medieval settings, turning the vast ruined fortress into a busy battle set, with weapons, smoke, horses, and around 150 extras filling the site.

Founded in the 13th century, Rábí grew into the largest castle complex in Bohemia before falling into ruin. Its massive walls, towers, courtyards, and defensive works give the film’s action sequences a battered, lived-in quality.

🌳  Dobříš Chateau

Dobříš Chateau brought a more polished side of Last Knights to the screen, with its elegant interiors and formal gardens contrasting sharply with the film’s battered fortresses and rugged landscapes.

Built in the 18th century for the Colloredo-Mansfeld family, the chateau is known for its striking Rococo interiors and French formal garden. Its grand architecture suited the film’s world of privilege, power, and political intrigue rather well.

🏰  Plasy, Horšovský Týn, & Točník

Last Knights used several Czech castles to build its fictional medieval empire, including Plasy, Horšovský Týn Castle, and Točník Castle.

Each offers a different architectural character, from the monumental monastery complex at Plasy to the imposing Gothic fortifications of Točník Castle. Their historic courtyards, towers, stone walls, and grand interiors provide an authentic medieval backdrop.
