First Knight (1995) gave the Arthurian legend a 1990s makeover, replacing magic and sorcery with political intrigue, sword fights, and a complicated love triangle.

Released in 1995, Jerry Zucker’s medieval romance stars Sean Connery as King Arthur, Richard Gere as Lancelot, Julia Ormond as Guinevere, and Ben Cross as Malagant.

Arthur proposes to Guinevere to unite their kingdoms, but she’s ambushed by Malagant on the way to Camelot. Lancelot rescues her and falls for Arthur’s future wife, creating a forbidden romance that threatens the kingdom when Malagant attacks.

The film avoids supernatural elements and draws on Arthurian romance traditions, particularly Chrétien de Troyes’ Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart. Filmed across North Wales and England, the production used Trawsfynydd Lake for Camelot’s exterior.

🏰  First Knight Filming Locations

From a lakeside Camelot in Wales to ancient English woodland, the production found plenty of real-world scenery worthy of Arthurian legend.

🏞️  Trawsfynydd Lake, Gwynedd

Trawsfynydd Lake in Gwynedd became the exterior setting for Camelot. A large set was constructed beside the lake with digital effects expanding the city, making the settlement appear considerably larger on screen.

The lake sits within the spectacular Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) and remains one of the best locations for fans wanting to see the landscape behind Camelot. The castle is long gone, but the scenery that framed it remains impressively Arthurian.

⛰️  Eryri (Snowdonia), Gwynedd

The wider Eryri (Snowdonia) region supplied many of the landscapes that made First Knight look convincingly medieval.

Production took place around Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Mawddach Estuary, and Black Rock Sands, with the mountains, valleys, water, and coastline creating the impression of a much larger kingdom.

⛏️  Llanfair Slate Mine, Gwynedd

Llanfair Slate Mine near Harlech provided First Knight with its darker subterranean environments. The former slate workings offered naturally dramatic caverns, tunnels, and rock formations that suited the film’s medieval atmosphere perfectly.

The mine sits within a region famous for its historic slate industry, with Harlech and the surrounding mountains adding even more medieval atmosphere.

🌊  Fairbourne & Mawddach Estuary, Gwynedd

The Fairbourne coast and Mawddach Estuary, with its wide tidal waters, rugged coastline, mountain views, and open Welsh countryside, brought some of First Knight’s most dramatic natural scenery to its medieval setting.

With the mountains rising behind the estuary and the sea opening out toward Cardigan Bay, the location gave the production a distinctly wild, windswept backdrop for its outdoor scenes.

⛪  St Albans Cathedral, Hertfordshire

St Albans Cathedral provided one of First Knight’s most recognizable real-world interiors. The cathedral was used for Arthur and Guinevere’s wedding, giving the ceremony an imposing medieval setting. Its historic architecture also fits the film’s aesthetic remarkably well.

The cathedral stands in the historic city of St Albans on a site associated with Roman Britain and centuries of religious history. Its one of the city’s major attractions and easy to visit from London.

🌳  Ashridge Estate, Hertfordshire

Ashridge Estate near Little Gaddesden was transformed for First Knight with a constructed thatched village. The countryside provided a natural setting for the settlement, helping the production create a convincing medieval community.

The estate forms part of the Chiltern Hills and is managed by the National Trust. The movie village may be gone, but Ashridge remains worth exploring.

🍃  Burnham Beeches, Buckinghamshire

Burnham Beeches supplied another stretch of woodland for First Knight. Its ancient beech trees and dense forest provided an atmospheric backdrop for outdoor medieval sequences, while its location near Pinewood Studios made it convenient for production.

Burnham Beeches has also appeared in numerous other film and television productions and is a protected nature reserve good for combining film history with a countryside walk.

⚔️  Stratfield Saye, Hampshire

Stratfield Saye in Hampshire was used to film battle sequences near the Roman road known as the Devil’s Highway. The estate supplied the open countryside needed for large-scale medieval action.

Stratfield Saye has been the Hampshire home of the Dukes of Wellington since 1817, when the nation purchased the estate and presented it to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, after his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo.

The estate remains closely associated with the Wellington family, with the house, parkland, and Wellington’s former residence preserving that connection.

❓  First Knight FAQs

What sword did Lancelot use in First Knight?
Lancelot’s sword fighting was choreographed under legendary sword master Bob Anderson, with Richard Gere undergoing extensive training for the role.

Were the First Knight sword blades real?
The blades in the climactic Lancelot and Malagant duel were digitally added during post-production, while the actors performed with sword hilts. This allowed the fight to be performed at high speed without the actors actually clashing sharp metal blades.

Why does Richard Gere sometimes appear to have a sword without a blade?
The full-frame pan-and-scan VHS version revealed portions of the original widescreen image differently, exposing shots where Gere appears to be holding only a sword hilt. It became one of the movie’s strangest home-video curiosities.

Who played Lancelot’s first opponent?
Mark Ryan played Lancelot’s first opponent in the opening tournament and also worked as an assistant sword master on the production.

Was there a real knight in First Knight?
Yes. John Gielgud, who played Oswald, was knighted in 1953 and was therefore a genuine knight in the cast. He was 90 during filming and turned 91 before the movie’s release.

Is Malagant actually Mordred?
No. Malagant is based on Meleagant, the villain from Chrétien de Troyes’ Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart, rather than the traditional Mordred.

Does First Knight have Merlin?
No. The movie deliberately removes Merlin, magic, and most supernatural elements to create a more grounded Arthurian story.
