Where was X-Men filmed? Step into Cerebro to uncover the Canadian castles, Aussie quarries, and haunted asylums where claws popped and walls broke.

Welcome, true believers and timeline warriors. For 24 years, mutants have been saving a world that hates and fears them – mostly from Canadian soundstages.
Professor X’s “School for Gifted Youngsters” is actually a coal baron’s castle. Alkali Lake is three different lakes and a Vancouver backlot. And that creepy asylum where Dani Moonstar fought a demon bear? A real abandoned hospital that’s probably haunted.
From Hugh Jackman’s last-minute sprint into spandex to Ryan Reynolds personally writing checks to keep joke writers on set, every film left boot prints across three continents.
Grab your Danger Room pass – we’re going location hunting. And yes, we’ll answer where the heck Deadpool was during Infinity War (Spoiler: watching the trailer and complaining).

🗺️ X-Men Filming Locations
Ready to see where every claw pop, explosion, and fourth-wall break actually happened? Let’s go.
🧬 X-Men (2000)
X-Men (2000) introduced us to a world where having a cool mutation gets you called a menace, and Professor Charles Xavier runs a safehouse school for mutants.
His pacifist X-Men – Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey, and a newly arrived adamantium-clawed amnesiac named Logan – face off against Magneto’s Brotherhood, who think humanity had its chance. Also, a senator turns into water.
Hugh Jackman was cast three weeks into filming after original choice Dougray Scott got held up on a Mission: Impossible set. Jackman flew in, got spray-tanned, and became a legend – all because Tom Cruise needed a villain.
Also, Stan Lee’s first Marvel movie cameo is here: he’s the hot dog vendor who watches a naked, blue Senator Kelly crawl out of the ocean. Stan’s face says, “I’ve seen everything.”
Cast: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Famke Janssen, James Marsden.

💧 X2: X-Men United (2003)
In X2: X-Men United (2003), anti-mutant zealot Colonel William Stryker (Brian Cox, chewing scenery like it’s his last meal) attacks Xavier’s school, brainwashes Nightcrawler, and tries to wipe out every mutant on Earth.
The X-Men must team up with Magneto, who proves that “enemy of my enemy” is just code for “I’ll betray you in 20 minutes.”
The Nightcrawler White House sequence took months of choreography and computer animation. Alan Cumming spent hours in blue makeup, which he later said made him “look like a smurf with a death wish.”
Also, watch for the “X” in the 20th Century Fox logo staying lit longer – a franchise easter egg that started here (or technically the first film, but X2 made it a tradition).
And yes, that’s Brian Cox, who played a real-life mutant-hater in X2 and then played a dad in Succession – upgrade?
Cast: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Brian Cox, Alan Cumming, Famke Janssen.

💉 X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
In X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), a pharmaceutical company invents a “cure” for the mutant gene. Magneto calls it genocide. Also, Jean Grey is back from the dead and has split personality disorder with God-level powers.
The result? An all-out war on Alcatraz, a bridge gets moved (because why not), and fans collectively agreed this one was… rushed. This film featured a groundbreaking digital de-aging of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in a flashback. In 2006, that was witchcraft. Today, it looks like a Snapchat filter.
Also, Elliot Page (then Ellen Page) joined as Kitty Pryde, and her “phasing through a helicopter” scene was shot with a lot of wires and a prayer. The “cure” storyline was supposed to be two movies, but Fox wanted a trilogy fast. You can feel the rush in every “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch” meme.
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Elliot Page, Halle Berry, Kelsey Grammer (yes, Beast).

⚔️ X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) took us to a flashback before the yellow spandex, when Logan and his brother Victor (Sabretooth) fight in every American war from the Civil War to Vietnam.
Then Logan quits the black-ops team, Weapon X, gets adamantium bonded to his skeleton (ouch), and loses his memory. Also, Ryan Reynolds debuted as Wade Wilson/Deadpool with laser eyes, katanas in his arms, and his mouth sewn shut. Fans have never forgiven this.
Reynolds spent the next decade making fun of this movie. In Deadpool 2, he time-travels back to shoot this version of himself. That’s commitment to the bit. Also, Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth was so good that fans still want a prequel.
But will.i.am as a teleporting mutant named “Kestrel”? That choice remains… a choice.
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Danny Huston, will.i.am (yes, really).

🎓 X-Men: First Class (2011)
X-Men: First Class (2011) took us back to 1962 and the Cuban Missile Crisis. This movie started life as X-Men Origins: Magneto – a solo film about Erik hunting Nazis. Then someone said, “What if we just… made it good?” And First Class was born.
A young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy, with hair) and Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender, with revenge) team up to stop Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon, with a helmet) from starting World War III. Along the way, they recruit a bunch of teens, including a shape-shifting Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence, pre-Hunger Games fame).
Kevin Bacon plays Shaw with such glee that you almost forgive the nuclear sub made of a soundstage. Also, Fassbender’s “F*** off” scene in an Argentine bar? That was filmed in Georgia, USA. The magic of cinema.
And yes, Mystique was originally going to be naked and blue the whole time, but Jennifer Lawrence said, “I’d like to wear a robe between takes, thanks.”
Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Nicholas Hoult.
X-Men: First Class filming locations:
- Englefield House, Theale, Reading, Berkshire: Charles Xavier’s estate & early mutant academy.

🏯 The Wolverine (2013)
In The Wolverine (2013), Logan is haunted by killing Jean Grey (again), and travels to Japan to say goodbye to a man he saved from Nagasaki. That man dies, Logan gets his healing factor stolen by a parasite, and suddenly he can be hurt – with swords, arrows, and a giant robot samurai. Also, ninjas. So many ninjas.
To get shredded for that shirtless scene, Hugh Jackman called Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for diet advice. The Rock’s answer: 6,000 calories a day and “just lift heavy, brother.” Jackman said he’s never been hungrier.
Also, the love hotel fight scene was filmed in a set that had working neon signs – one of which read “Hugh’s Place” as a joke. The final robot samurai? Pure CGI, but the silver samurai armor was a real, 50-pound practical suit that the actor could barely move in. Method acting, folks.
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, Svetlana Khodchenkova.

- Oberon, Blue Mountains: Snowy Canadian Yukon wilderness scenes.
- Picton, Greater Sydney: Yukon town scenes.

⏳ X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) is based in a dystopian 2023, where killer Sentinels have turned mutants into endangered species.
Wolverine’s consciousness is sent back to 1973 to stop Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask – the guy who invents the Sentinels. If he fails, the future cast (Stewart, McKellen, etc.) gets incinerated. No pressure, bub.
This was the first X-Men film to cross $700 million worldwide, proving that time-travel fixes everything. Peter Dinklage played Bolivar Trask – yes, Tyrion Lannister built Sentinels.
The scene where Quicksilver (Evan Peters) runs through the Pentagon kitchen in slow motion to James Brown’s “I Feel Good” took 2 weeks to shoot and required a special camera that shot at 3,000 frames per second.
Peters wore a wire rig and actually ran on a treadmill for hours. He said his legs “hated everyone.”
Cast: Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Peter Dinklage, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen.
X-Men: Days of Future Past filming locations:
- Olympic Stadium, Montréal: Climax where Magneto levitates the RFK Stadium in DC.
- McCall MacBain Arts Building, McGill University, Montréal: Quicksilver’s kitchen escape at The Pentagon.

- Mel’s Cité du Cinéma soundstages, Montréal: Dystopian future monastery.

💬 Deadpool (2016)
In the much-awaited Deadpool (2016), former Special Forces operative Wade Wilson gets cancer, gets tricked into an experimental treatment, and emerges with accelerated healing – and a face like a testicle with teeth.
He hunts down the man who did it to him (Ajax) while breaking the fourth wall, making raunchy jokes, and reminding us that Ryan Reynolds was born for this role.
Because Fox gave this movie a tiny budget ($58 million – peanuts for a superhero film), Ryan Reynolds personally paid out of pocket to keep the screenwriters (Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick) on set every day.
He wanted the jokes to land, and they did. The post-credits scene where Deadpool spoofs Ferris Bueller (“You’re still here?”) was filmed in one take on a borrowed soundstage.
Also, the “Deadpool kills the Origins version of himself” gag? That was Reynolds’s idea. Healing factor for wounds, humor for wounds of the past.
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano.

🏺 X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
In X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), the first mutant – Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac, buried under 40 pounds of purple prosthetics) – wakes up in 1983, decides humanity is weak, and recruits a disillusioned Magneto to help him reboot civilization.
The X-Men (now including young Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler) must stop him before he destroys everything. Also, Quicksilver has another slow-mo rescue scene – because why mess with success?
Quicksilver’s mansion rescue took nearly a month to shoot using Phantom cameras at 3,000 frames per second. The scene where he runs on walls while listening to “Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” required Evan Peters to be strapped to a rotating set. He vomited twice.
Oscar Isaac, meanwhile, spent 3 hours in makeup every morning and later said he “almost lost his mind.” He delivered Apocalypse’s famous line – “I am as far beyond mutants as they are beyond humans”? – in a voice so low that editors had to raise the pitch. True story.
Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters.
Where was X-Men: Apocalypse filmed?
- Corona Theatre in Montréal: East Berlin Fight Club where Angel battles Nightcrawler.

🌵 Logan (2017)
In Logan (2017), the year is 2029. No new mutants have been born in 25 years. A weary, alcoholic Logan works as a limo driver near the Mexican border, caring for an ailing Professor X (whose seizures can kill everyone nearby).
Then a young mutant girl named Laura (11 years old Dafne Keen, doing almost all of her own stunts) shows up with adamantium claws of her own. It’s Children of Men with claws and tears.
Hugh Jackman took a substantial pay cut so that Fox would approve an R-rating. He wanted blood, swearing, and real stakes. The result: the best-reviewed X-Men film ever.
Patrick Stewart said this was his favorite performance as Xavier – a broken, apologetic old man who accidentally kills people. The “dead body” in the background of one scene? That was a prop. But the emotional corpse of Fox’s PG-13 era? Very real.
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant (as Caliban, the albino tracker).
Where was Logan filmed?
- Hammond, Louisiana: Casino & hotel escape from El Paso into Oklahoma.
- Albuquerque & Plaza Blanca, Abiquiú, New Mexico: “Dakota Badlands” & “Oklahoma”.
- Corkins Lodge, Chama, New Mexico: Final forest and refuge scenes.
- Amite City, Louisiana: Quaint Colorado town.
- Ferriday, Louisiana: The Muñoz family corn farm.
- Golden Oak Ranch, Newhall, California: Transigen forest chase scenes.
- NASA Michoud Assembly Facility: Fight sequence againstReavers at Mexican border hideout.

⚡ Deadpool 2 (2018)
In Deadpool 2 (2018), Wade forms the X-Force – a team so incompetent that most of them die during their first jump.
He’s trying to protect a fire-wielding mutant kid named Russell from Cable (Josh Brolin), a cyborg from the future who wants the kid dead. Also, there’s a song about rainbows.
Brad Pitt cameoed as the invisible mutant Vanisher for exactly 1 second – when he gets electrocuted and becomes visible. Pitt did it for a cup of coffee as payment.
Also, the post-credits scene where Deadpool uses Cable’s time-travel device to fix X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Green Lantern? Reynolds wrote those scenes himself.
And the “Dubstep” joke about a certain Logan death? Too dark? Just dark enough.
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Zazie Beetz (Domino, lucky AF), Julian Dennison, Rob Delaney.

🔥 Dark Phoenix (2019)
Dark Phoenix (2019) was the last mainline X-Men film from 20th Century Fox before Disney bought everything. During a space rescue mission, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) gets hit by a cosmic force that turns her into the all-powerful Phoenix.
She accidentally kills Mystique, goes on the run, and gets manipulated by a shapeshifting alien named Vuk (Jessica Chastain, wasted). The X-Men tear apart, Magneto shows up with a helmet, and everyone regrets calling this “the final chapter.”
The train fight scene – easily the best action in the movie – was shot over two months on a practical set. Sophie Turner said she cried after her last day because the franchise meant so much to her.
Jessica Chastain’s alien character was originally supposed to be a giant bird monster, but the budget said no. Also, the film lost $60 million at the box office. Oof.
Cast: Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence (briefly), Jessica Chastain, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan.
Where was Dark Phoenix filmed?
- Mount Royal Park, Montreal: Stand in for Central Park in New York City.
- Rue Saint-Paul est, Montreal: Historic street in utilized for city sequence filming.
- Terrebonne, Quebec: The site used for the “party in the forest” scene.
- Mel’s Cité du Cinéma soundstages, Montréal: Train final battle.

😱 The New Mutants (2020)
In The New Mutants (2020), five young mutants – Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Cannonball, Sunspot, and Mirage – are trapped in a secret psychiatric institution.
They each have a trauma demon, and one by one, those demons become real. It’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest with superpowers and a demon bear.
To capture a genuine horror aesthetic, the production used the real abandoned hospital instead of building sets. That meant no heating, no AC, and actual asbestos warnings. Anya Taylor-Joy later said she “didn’t sleep for weeks.”
The film was delayed for two years due to Disney-Fox merger reshoots – which never happened – becoming a running joke. When it finally released in 2020 (peak pandemic), everyone went, “Oh yeah, that movie.” It’s now a cult classic for horror-mutant fans.
Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, Alice Braga (as Dr. Reyes).
Where was The New Mutants filmed?
- Medfield State Hospital, Medfield, Massachusetts: The asylum interiors & exteriors.
- Grounds of Medfield State Hospital: Forest and outdoor therapy areas.
- Boston soundstages: Demon Bear finale.

🫶🏽 Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) officially integrated Fox’s X-Men universe into the Disney MCU. The TVA (from Loki) pulls Wade Wilson from his quiet life as a used car salesman.
They need him to stop a timeline-destroying threat, but he needs a Wolverine – so he digs up a cynical, alcoholic Logan variant from another universe. Together, they fight, banter, and finally wear comic-accurate suits. Also, there’s a scene with 100 Deadpool variants.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman spent months teasing each other online. Jackman finally got to wear the classic yellow-and-blue Wolverine suit – which he said was “hell to pee in.”
Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova wears a bald cap that took two hours to apply. And the scene where Deadpool uses Wolverine’s skeleton as a weapon? Jackman insisted on filming it practically. Because of course he did.
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin (as Cassandra Nova), Matthew Macfadyen (as TVA’s Paradox), and cameos galore.
Where was Deadpool & Wolverine filmed?
- Pitstone Quarry, Buckinghamshire, England: The Void dystopian wastelands.
- Holkham Beach, Norfolk, England: Deadpool and Wolverine meet Dogpool.
