The Madison proves you don’t need a ranch war, a cattle stampede, or Beth Dutton throwing a coffee mug at someone to make Montana look spectacular.

Created by Taylor Sheridan, this contemporary neo-Western drama follows the wealthy Clyburn family as they leave New York City behind after a devastating tragedy and attempt to rebuild their lives in Montana‘s breathtaking Madison River Valley.

The series also marks Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell’s first on-screen reunion since Tequila Sunrise (1988). They lead an impressive cast that includes Patrick J. Adams, Beau Garrett, Matthew Fox, Elle Chapman, Kevin Zegers, and Ben Schnetzer.

Although set in Montana and New York, the series relied on authentic ranches, charming towns, and even an unexpected Texas stand-in for Manhattan. So, where was The Madison filmed? Let’s take a closer look.

🏔️  The Madison Filming Locations

From a massive working cattle ranch in Montana to a Texas city pulling off a Manhattan impression, these locations give The Madison its distinctive sense of place.

🤠  KG Ranch, Three Forks, Montana

KG Ranch is the Clyburn family’s sprawling Montana home and one of the most important filming locations in The Madison. The 26,000-acre working cattle ranch sits southwest of Three Forks, along the Jefferson River, surrounded by open grasslands and mountain ranges.

The scale of the property immediately gives the Clyburns‘ new life a sense of isolation. After leaving New York City, they aren’t simply changing addresses; they’re stepping into a landscape where the horizon stretches for miles and the ranch itself becomes part of their everyday world.

Production filmed around the ranch’s existing barns, corrals, fences, and working cattle areas, preserving the character of a genuine Montana ranch. Those details make the Clyburn property feel less like a television set and more like a place where a family could actually live, work, and try to start over.

🏘️  Ennis, Montana

The charming Western town of Ennis, Montana became the series’ community hub. Nestled in the Madison Valley, it provides the welcoming small-town atmosphere the story needs as the Clyburns settle into their new surroundings.

Production used genuine local businesses and Main Street locations, including Sphinx Mountain Saddlery (Horsefly), giving the town an authentic Montana feel. Its historic buildings, surrounding mountains, and slower pace create a sharp contrast with the family’s former life in New York.

🌆  Bozeman, Montana

Bozeman, Montana served as the production’s logistical headquarters and also appears on screen, with downtown streets and Main Street featured in several scenes.

Its mix of historic buildings and modern businesses gives The Madison a more urban side of Montana, contrasting with the wide-open landscape of the Clyburn ranch.

🚕  Dallas & Fort Worth, Texas

Despite beginning in New York City, The Madison never filmed there. Instead, production turned parts of Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, into Manhattan, using yellow taxis, NYPD-branded vehicles, and carefully chosen streets to sell the illusion.

The area around Fort Worth’s historic Sinclair Hotel also doubled for New York, creating a surprisingly convincing urban backdrop. It’s one of those filming tricks that makes you appreciate just how much can change with the right location, vehicles, and camera angle.
