Spoiler: most of the galaxy was actually London and Georgia.
🚀 Where Was Guardians of the Galaxy Filmed?
In Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, steals an orb containing an Infinity Stone. Enter Ronan the Accuser, a Kree fanatic who wants to destroy Xandar.
Forced to work with Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax, Quill learns that “friendship” is just a fancy word for “don’t kill each other.” The film’s heart comes from its rag-tag bond – and from a dancing distraction that saves the universe.
London’s Lloyd’s Building, which looks like a spaceship crashed into a steampunk bank vault, became Xandar’s high-tech streets. You can walk under its exposed pipework and feel like you’re about to be mugged by a Nova Corps officer.
A five-minute Tube ride away, the Millennium Bridge (the Harry Potter one) doubles as a Xandarian bridge under attack. No explosions on Tuesdays, sadly.

For the ultimate Guardians pilgrimage, head to Hemel Hempstead Hospital in Hertfordshire. It’s a real working hospital, so maybe don’t show up in a Star-Lord helmet demanding to see your dying mother – but the exterior is where young Peter Quill said his last goodbye.
The Kyln prison? That was 100 tons of steel inside Shepperton Studios in Surrey. The steel was sold for scrap, but you can stand outside and pretend to be Rocket picking a lock.

🌱 Where Was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Filmed?
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), our now famous heroes-for-hire tick off the Sovereign by stealing their batteries. While fleeing, they meet Ego (Kurt Russell), a living planet who claims to be Peter’s dad.
But Ego’s “paradise” hides a genocidal plan. Meanwhile, Yondu (Michael Rooker) gets a heartbreaking redemption arc. The film asks, “What if your father was a narcissistic planet?” and answers with a three-way arrow kill shot.
The filming action moved to Georgia, including a Dairy Queen. In Stone Mountain, just outside Atlanta, you can stand where the Guardians briefly touched Earth – specifically at a DQ parking lot. Order a Blizzard and pretend you’re Rocket stealing batteries.
Nearby Cartersville (about 45 minutes northwest) hosted brief Earth-set flashback scenes; it’s a charming small town with antebellum architecture and zero Sovereign drones.
The real star, though, is Trilith Studios in Fayetteville. While you can’t walk onto active soundstages, the surrounding town has become a film-geek haven – think Guardians murals, themed food trucks, and locals who’ve definitely served Dave Bautista coffee.
Trilith also has a public backlot tour on select weekends. Ask about the “Sneeper” controversy. They’ll know.

🦝 Where Was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Filmed?
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), Rocket is critically wounded by Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), and an internal kill-switch stops all treatment.
To save him, the Guardians storm the High Evolutionary’s (Chukwudi Iwuji) grotesque laboratory – a place of tortured animals and cosmic horror. It’s a tearjerker – but also a hilarious farewell.
For the final chapter, the Guardians went full road trip. Trilith Studios in Fayetteville served as Knowhere and the High Evolutionary’s nightmare ship.
Counter-Earth was filmed at a private residential cul-de-sac in Fayette County, Georgia. The crew even turned a resident’s garage into a living room for the shoot. Additional Counter-Earth scenes were shot at the Atlanta Country Club in Marietta.
But the real gem is the Trona Pinnacles in the California desert – about three hours northeast of Los Angeles. This otherworldly landscape of over 500 tufa spires rising from a dry lake bed has been in countless sci-fi films (The Mandalorian, Star Trek V, Planet of the Apes), but here it stands in for an unnamed alien planet.
You can camp overnight, hike the dirt trails, and absolutely pretend you’re escaping Adam Warlock. No permits needed for day use. Bring water – unlike the Guardians, you won’t survive on spite and 70s mixtapes.
The Holiday Special (2022) saw Mantis and Drax kidnap Kevin Bacon to cheer up a depressed Peter and save Christmas. It was filmed entirely at Trilith. The studio’s Christmas tour (November-December) includes a “Mantis & Drax’s Kidnapping Route” walking path. Yes, really.
