Few movies blend old Hollywood glamour, wartime espionage, and heartbreaking romance quite like the WWII spy thriller, Allied (2016).

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film stars Brad Pitt as Canadian intelligence officer Max Vatan and Marion Cotillard as French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour.

They play two undercover operatives who fall in love while posing as husband and wife during a dangerous mission in Nazi-occupied Casablanca. Their perfect romance takes a devastating turn after British intelligence suspects Marianne may actually be a German sleeper agent.

Unlike many World War II films that travel across Europe, Allied recreated much of 1940s Morocco in the Canary Islands while using historic locations across London for its wartime Britain scenes.

Director Robert Zemeckis also filmed much of the story chronologically, allowing the emotional relationship between Pitt and Cotillard to evolve naturally throughout production.

Combined with lavish period costumes, practical sets, vintage vehicles, and seamless CGI, the result is a visually stunning globe-trotting thriller that feels both classic and modern.

🕵🏽  Allied Filming Locations

From sweeping desert dunes to elegant London streets, these real-world locations helped transport audiences back to World War II.

🏙️  London, England

London became the emotional heart of Allied after Max and Marianne leave Casablanca and attempt to build a normal family life during the Blitz.

The filmmakers chose historic neighborhoods that already looked like 1940s Britain, using CGI to remove modern details while vintage vehicles and period props completed the wartime transformation.

Several historic sites appear throughout the film. Blythe House in West Kensington doubled as British intelligence headquarters, where Max receives the devastating news that his beloved wife may actually be a Nazi spy.

Christchurch Hill and Hampstead Heath provided peaceful residential backdrops surrounding the couple’s family home, making the later emotional revelations even more heartbreaking.

Meanwhile, Pullens Yard in Southwark, with its beautifully preserved Victorian brick courtyards, supplied atmospheric London street scenes requiring very little modification.

🏜️  Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

If you thought Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard were actually wandering through Morocco, the visual effects team deserves a standing ovation.

Much of Allied’s version of 1942 Casablanca was actually created on Fuerteventura, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, whose golden dunes and volcanic landscapes closely resemble North Africa.

The spectacular Parque Natural de Corralejo became the outskirts of Casablanca and large sections of the Sahara Desert. It’s here that Max parachutes into North Africa before meeting Marianne for the first time, beginning one of cinema’s most glamorous undercover missions.

Endless rolling dunes also appear during several driving sequences, giving audiences the impression that the characters are traveling hundreds of miles across the desert.

The rugged volcanic landscape of Caldera de Arrabales was transformed into isolated military territory beyond the city. Its barren terrain perfectly conveyed danger while contrasting with Casablanca‘s elegant nightclubs and sophisticated social gatherings.

🏛️  Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

While Fuerteventura supplied the sweeping desert landscapes, Gran Canaria delivered the elegant colonial atmosphere needed for Casablanca itself.

The production transformed the historic Plaza de Cairasco in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria into a vibrant French Moroccan city filled with fashionable cafés, vintage automobiles, bustling markets, military officers, palm trees, and beautifully dressed civilians.

The square features several early scenes as Max and Marianne pose as a wealthy married couple while preparing to assassinate the German ambassador. Period shopfronts, market stalls, vintage cars, and hundreds of costumed extras transformed the square into 1940s Casablanca.

❓  Allied FAQs

Still piecing together the mission? Here are the answers to the most common questions about Allied (2016).

Is Allied based on a true story or a book?
No. Although Allied (2016) is inspired by real World War II espionage operations and sleeper-agent stories, it’s an original screenplay written for the screen by Steven Knight, not a true story.

What happens in the ending of Allied?
The climax reveals the heartbreaking truth about Marianne’s identity and forces Max to choose between duty and love. The emotional ending emphasizes the devastating personal cost of war and espionage rather than delivering a traditional action finale.

What was the famous Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard spy scene?
One of the film’s most memorable sequences is the couple’s undercover assassination mission in Casablanca, where they pose as wealthy socialites before carrying out a daring attack on a German ambassador. It perfectly blends romance, suspense, and old Hollywood glamour.

Why was the Canary Islands chosen instead of Morocco?
The Canary Islands offered expansive desert landscapes, colonial architecture, reliable weather, and easier filming logistics. CGI transformed it into a convincing version of 1942 Casablanca.

Was CGI used in Allied?
Yes. CGI was extensively but subtly used to extend city skylines, recreate wartime London, add bomb damage, expand Casablanca, remove modern buildings, and create larger military environments without overwhelming the practical photography.
