When a brutal storm forces the expedition team to evacuate, Jerry has no choice but to leave his eight sled dogs behind. The humans expect to return quickly.
Antarctica, naturally, has other plans. The dogs eventually break free and spend 175 days surviving the frozen wilderness while Jerry desperately tries to get back to them.
And despite all that snow, none of the movie was filmed in Antarctica (since dogs are no longer allowed there). The production used British Columbia, Greenland, and Svalbard to create its frozen world.

The filmmakers went north to Canada, Greenland, and Norway to make Antarctica look convincingly, well, Antarctic.

British Columbia did much of the heavy lifting for Eight Below, particularly around Smithers and Stewart.
Smithers’ Hudson Bay Mountain became one of the production’s principal locations, with the mountain’s snowy plateau (The Prairie) turned into an Antarctic research station.
Stewart’s Salmon Glacier provided the huge icy landscapes needed for the expedition sequences, while Vancouver supplied studio facilities for scenes that were impractical or dangerous to shoot outdoors.
The scale of the Canadian shoot was impressive. The production transported cast and crew up Hudson Bay Mountain, where weather determined which scenes could be filmed each day. Even Hollywood has to occasionally surrender to the weather forecast.

The Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard provided Eight Below with genuinely extreme Arctic scenery, from glaciers and polar deserts to rugged mountains and vast ice fields.
