Few action franchises have left as many shattered windows, exploding helicopters, and unforgettable one-liners behind as the Die Hard movies. Released between 1988 and 2013, the five-film series transformed Bruce Willis‘ wisecracking NYPD detective John McClane into one of cinema’s greatest action heroes.

Along the way, he faced unforgettable villains played by Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons, Timothy Olyphant, and Sebastian Koch, while surviving increasingly outrageous situations that somehow always seemed to happen around Christmas.

The franchise also helped redefine Hollywood action filmmaking by relying heavily on practical stunts, real explosions, and elaborate vehicle crashes long before CGI became the norm.

In fact, Alan Rickman was 41 years old and making his very first feature film when he accepted the role of Hans Gruber, creating one of the greatest movie villains of all time after nearly turning the part down.

So, grab your shoes (you’ll need them more than McClane did) as we explore the real filming locations behind every Die Hard movie.

🔫  How Many Die Hard Movies Are There?

There are five films in the Die Hard franchise. If you’re planning a marathon, the best way to watch them is in release order:

While Die Hard (1988) is considered the first film in the franchise, there’s an unusual predecessor. The Detective (1968), starring Frank Sinatra, is based on the novel that precedes Nothing Lasts Forever – the book on which Die Hard (1988) is based.

As a direct literary sequel to The Detective (book), Sinatra’s contract required the studio to offer him the lead role in Die Hard first. At age 73, he politely declined, allowing Bruce Willis to take over as John McClane.

In a sense, The Detective (1968) movie can be viewed as the franchise’s unofficial first chapter.

🗺️  Die Hard Movies Filming Locations

From a single Los Angeles skyscraper to New York streets and Budapest, the Die Hard franchise continually raised the stakes.

🏢  Die Hard Filming Locations

Everything about Die Hard (1988) feels authentic because much of it actually was. Although set almost entirely inside the fictional Nakatomi Plaza, the film was shot inside the real Fox Plaza in Century City, Los Angeles.

The 34-story skyscraper had only recently been completed, with several unfinished floors giving filmmakers the perfect playground for explosions, gunfights, and destruction.

Bruce Willis stars as John McClane, an NYPD detective hoping to reconcile with his estranged wife Holly at her company’s Christmas Eve party. Instead, he finds himself battling Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman in his feature film debut, as the criminals attempt to steal $640 million in bearer bonds.

The film became legendary for its practical stunts. Rickman’s iconic death scene featured a real 40-foot backward fall onto an airbag. To capture a genuine reaction, the stunt team dropped him on the count of two instead of three, giving audiences that unforgettable look of shock.

The production also left its mark on Bruce Willis. Extra-loud blank rounds fired during one scene permanently damaged hearing in his left ear. Meanwhile, the famous barefoot-on-glass sequence combined sugar glass with real shards, while specially made rubber prosthetic feet kept Willis safe.

Another memorable stunt saw Willis perform the initial leap from the exploding rooftop himself, jumping five stories onto a giant airbag before stunt double Ken Bates took over for the spectacular crash through a breakaway window.

✈️  Die Hard 2 Filming Locations

In Die Hard 2 (1990), John McClane swaps a skyscraper for an airport, proving Christmas travel can always get worse.

The action begins at Washington Dulles International Airport, where McClane waits for Holly’s Christmas Eve flight before uncovering a rogue military plot led by Colonel Stuart.

After terrorists seize the airport’s communication systems, incoming planes are left circling overhead with dangerously low fuel while McClane races to avert disaster.

Although set in Virginia, most of the film was shot at Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, with additional scenes filmed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Kincheloe Air Force Base in Michigan.

The airport’s maze-like utility tunnels weren’t airports at all. They were actually the massive concrete corridors of the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys, California.

The sequel also doubled down on practical effects. McClane’s unforgettable ejector-seat escape was achieved with a pneumatic catapult that launched a stunt performer from a full-scale cockpit, while the exploding aircraft was a meticulously crafted 1/7-scale miniature.

One final challenge? Denver didn’t have enough snow. So the crew gave Mother Nature a helping hand, blanketing the airport with potato flakes, shaved ice, and artificial snow to create the perfect Christmas Eve blizzard.

🗽  Die Hard with a Vengeance Filming Locations

After two Christmas adventures, Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) takes the action to New York City, where suspended detective John McClane is forced into a deadly game by Simon Gruber, the vengeful brother of Hans Gruber.

Teaming up with reluctant Harlem shopkeeper Zeus Carver, played by Samuel L. Jackson, McClane races across Manhattan solving riddles while Simon secretly pulls off one of cinema’s biggest gold heists at the Federal Reserve Bank.

The production made full use of New York’s iconic locations, filming across Manhattan and the Bronx, including Central Park, Yankee Stadium, and the area around the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The famous water-jug riddle was filmed at Tompkins Square Park, where the production built its own fountain rather than using an existing one. Apparently, Hollywood prefers custom plumbing.

Not everything was shot in New York. The spectacular subway crash was filmed on massive soundstages inside a former General Dynamics facility in North Charleston, South Carolina.

The film also featured impressive practical stunts. During the Central Park taxi chase, the panicked pedestrians were actually hundreds of stunt performers, carefully choreographed to dive out of the taxi’s path.

Another standout sequence saw McClane ride a cargo cable onto a moving ship, made possible by a custom-built mechanical decelerator that stopped the stunt performer just inches before impact.

The ending almost looked very different. The original finale had McClane tracking Simon to Europe months later for a deadly game of “McClane Says.” The studio decided that version made McClane a little too revenge-happy and replaced it with the now-iconic helicopter chase.

💻  Live Free or Die Hard Filming Locations

By the fourth film, Live Free or Die Hard (2007), John McClane had traded bank robbers for cyber-terrorists. The story follows the veteran detective as he’s assigned to bring hacker Matt Farrell into custody, only to become caught in a nationwide “fire sale” attack designed to cripple America’s infrastructure.

Although set in Washington, D.C., much of the film was shot in Baltimore, Maryland, with additional scenes filmed in Camden, New Jersey, and Pomona, California.

Baltimore’s downtown streets, particularly around East Lexington Street and North Calvert Street, hosted many of the movie’s explosive car chases and shootouts. Diamond Ranch High School in Pomona convincingly doubled as the Social Security Administration.

Bruce Willis also endured one of the toughest shoots in the franchise. During a fight scene, an accidental kick above the eye caused a serious head injury that temporarily halted production.

The action once again leaned heavily on practical effects. McClane’s unforgettable stunt of launching a police cruiser into a helicopter was achieved by firing a stripped-down car from a massive nitrogen-powered cannon while the helicopter was suspended from crane cables.

Another standout sequence saw McClane battling Mai Linh inside an SUV hanging down an elevator shaft. Production built a full-scale 80-foot vertical elevator rig, suspending the vehicle on computer-controlled cables before dropping it with the actors safely secured in hidden harnesses.

🚗  A Good Day to Die Hard Filming Locations

The fifth and final film, A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), sends John McClane overseas for the first time. Reuniting with his estranged son Jack, a covert CIA operative, McClane is drawn into an international conspiracy involving corrupt Russian officials, political prisoner Yuri Komarov, and plenty of explosions.

Although set in Moscow, the film was shot primarily in Budapest, Hungary, whose grand boulevards and Soviet-era architecture made a convincing stand-in for the Russian capital. The nearby Hungaroring Formula One Circuit was also transformed into city streets for one of the franchise’s biggest action scenes.

That massive 15-minute highway chase required 78 days of preparation before filming even began. Rather than relying on CGI, the production destroyed more than 130 real vehicles, including over 60 completely wrecked cars.

Mercedes-Benz supplied prototype vehicles, while every car destined to be crushed by the armored truck was fitted with reinforced roll cages to protect the stunt drivers.

The sequence became one of the most ambitious car chases ever filmed. Even the giant armored vehicle plowing through rows of civilian cars was achieved largely with practical stunt work. Because if you’re going to flatten traffic, you might as well do it for real.

While the film embraced more digital effects than its predecessors, it still honored the franchise’s love of practical stunts, giving John McClane one last globe-trotting, explosion-filled farewell.
