Where was Gladiator filmed? Explore where Gladiator and Gladiator II were filmed, from Malta’s Colosseum set to Morocco’s deserts and Tuscany’s fields.

Few historical epics hit as hard as Gladiator (2000). Directed by Ridley Scott, the film followed Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) after he was betrayed by Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and forced into slavery.

Armed with rage, honor, and a sword, Maximus rises through the gladiator ranks seeking justice in the Roman arena. Russell Crowe was 35 while filming Gladiator, and his powerful performance earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

More than two decades later, Gladiator II (2024) returned audiences to the Roman Empire. Directed again by Ridley Scott, the sequel starred Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Denzel Washington, continuing the legacy of Rome’s brutal arenas and political intrigue.

But both films’ greatest strengths weren’t just their cast or story, but the spectacular real-world filming locations that brought ancient Rome and the world of gladiators vividly to life.

From Malta’s colossal arena sets to Morocco’s scorching deserts and Tuscany’s dreamlike fields, here’s where the world of Gladiator was truly brought to life.

🏟️  Malta – Ancient Rome and the Colosseum

Where was Gladiator‘s Colosseum filmed? The Colosseum scenes in Gladiator (2000) were filmed at Fort Ricasoli in Malta – a rugged seaside fortress that Hollywood convincingly transformed into ancient Rome (no toga required).

For the movie, the production team built a massive Colosseum set about one-third the size of the real arena. The towering upper levels and the deafening crowds were later added with CGI, turning a partial structure into a stadium packed with tens of thousands of bloodthirsty Romans.

Malta turned out to be the perfect stand-in for Rome. Its honey-colored limestone forts, dramatic coastline, and huge open filming spaces made it easy to recreate the grandeur of the Roman Empire.

Add some sand, a few thousand extras shouting dramatically, and voilà – instant Colosseum. It’s movie magic at its finest: build a bit, digitize the rest, and suddenly Maximus has an audience the size of a small city.

The location worked so well that Gladiator II returned to Malta over 20 years later, building towering arena sets for a new generation of gladiators – and thousands of CGI Romans who are much easier to manage than the real thing.

Malta remains one of Europe’s most popular filming destinations thanks to its historic architecture and film incentives.

🐪  Morocco – Gladiator Training & Desert Travel

Gladiator’s Moroccan scenes were shot in Ouarzazate and Aït Benhaddou – the deserts where Maximus goes from “respected Roman general” to “yep, today’s not my day.”

The ancient fortified village of Aït Benhaddou doubled as a Roman province in North Africa, with its towering mud-brick walls and winding streets that look like they were built specifically for epic movies (and the occasional sword fight).

Just nearby, Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate – one of the largest film studios in the world – hosted several of the film’s set builds and production facilities, proving that even gladiators sometimes need a good backlot.

Ridley Scott clearly loved the location – so much that he returned to Morocco for Gladiator II, using its sweeping deserts to bring the Roman Empire’s African territories, including Numidia, back to life.

🌾  Val d’Orcia, Italy – Maximus’ Dream of Home

Where was Gladiator filmed in Italy? The breathtaking Val d’Orcia region of Tuscany – a landscape so picturesque it looks like it was painted by a Renaissance artist with a soft spot for golden sunsets.

Located near the town of Pienza, this rolling countryside represents Maximus’ peaceful farm, the quiet life he dreams of returning to between battles, betrayals, and the occasional tiger encounter.

Filming took place around Podere Poggio Manzuoli (Gladiator House) and Terrapille Farm, known for their sweeping wheat fields and elegant cypress-lined roads.

These landscapes became one of the film’s most iconic visual motifs: Maximus walking through golden wheat fields, dreaming of home… while the rest of the movie keeps throwing swords, sand, and Roman politics in his way.

🌲  Bourne Wood, England – The Opening Battle

Where was Gladiator‘s opening scene filmed? The brutal opening sequence was shot in Bourne Wood in Surrey, England.

Ridley Scott chose the location for its dark, dense forest, perfect for recreating Rome’s campaign in Germania – a place where the weather is cold, the trees are endless, and the locals are definitely not happy to see the Roman army.

With thick woodland, wide clearings, and plenty of space for explosions, catapults, and charging soldiers, Bourne Wood provided the ideal battlefield… or at least a very convincing place for thousands of extras to run around dramatically with swords.

Gladiator filming locations in England:

  • Bourne Wood, Surrey, England: Battle preparation in the forests of Germania.
  • Battlefield sets: Catapults launch flaming projectiles into enemy lines.
  • Germania forest clearing: Romans and Germanic tribes collide in a brutal infantry clash.
  • Bourne Wood ridge: Marcus Aurelius watches as Rome declares victory after the battle.

Trivia:

  • The battle used a 45-degree shutter technique to create its gritty, chaotic visual style.
  • Ridley Scott persuaded the Forestry Commission to let him burn sections of the forest to increase realism.

🐎  Sussex, England – Gladiator II Battlefields

One of the standout Gladiator 2 filming locations in the UK is Firedown Farm near Devil’s Dyke in Sussex.

The rolling hills of the South Downs National Park were transformed into Roman frontier battlefields – proving that with enough armor, horses, and very determined extras, even the peaceful English countryside can look ready for war.

For the sequel, the wide open landscape provided plenty of space for large-scale action scenes, cavalry charges, and dramatic troop movements… which is great news for filmmakers and slightly less relaxing for anyone who just came out for a quiet countryside walk.

Gladiator II filming locations, UK:

Trivia:

  • More than 60 horses and hundreds of extras were used during filming.
  • Production reportedly used cow manure to construct a Roman-style dirt road for authenticity.

🏜️  Alabama Hills, California – Maximus’ Journey

Though Gladiator (2000) was mostly shot abroad, a few scenes landed in the U.S. Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California, gave Maximus his rugged desert backdrop.

Dramatic rocks and wide-open spaces doubled for far-off Roman lands – Hollywood style: California + good lighting + one determined gladiator = anywhere in the empire.

Gladiator (2000)

  • Alabama Hills, Lone Pine: Maximus rides across harsh landscapes.
  • Desert rock formations: Far-flung regions of the Roman world.

Trivia:

  • A Hollywood favorite, Alabama Hills, has appeared in hundreds of Westerns since the 1920s.
  • Its unusual rock formations create instantly recognizable movie backdrops.

🎥  Shepperton Studios, England

Some scenes in Gladiator (2000) needed indoor sound stages – mainly for moments where characters talk instead of trying to stab each other.

Studio filming allowed the production team to build detailed Roman interiors – because even the epic Gladiator movies occasionally need a quiet room where nobody throws a spear.

Gladiator (2000) studio sets:

  • Roman Senate interiors: Political debates and scheming among Rome’s leaders.
  • Imperial palace chambers: Conversations between Commodus and the royal court.
  • Dialogue scenes: Character-driven moments filmed with controlled lighting and sound.
